Team-Building experience

Call time was 5:30 a.m. for our Bar-Ops outing and Evaluation/Team-Building together with the Father Regent. Yes, you heard it right, we were with Father Regent, Order of Preachers. But hey, he’s one cool Dominican priest. He of course wore something appropriate for the occasion like walking shorts and plain striped shirts.

We went to this place called Bahay San Jose, sorta private retreat with a pool and patios for weddings and parties. It’s quite good for a small gathering of around 20 to 30 people. We brought in our own food, (which was CPA, or chicken-pork adobo, courtesy of the Central Seminary kitchen), and surprisingly, the parish priest of Quiapo church sent food also. (He being the person who recommended to Father Regent the place)

I know, this might sound like the stereotypical Catholic schoolboy and Catholic school girl routine, but hey, we’re all adults in there. So definitely, there is alcohol and profanity.

After we celebrated mass (I like the small-community gathering, it’s more informal and intimate.) we had breakfast and conducted our small group evaluation for about an hour. As Academic Committee members, we discussed the problems that we encountered and suggested possible solutions for them. Since we encountered the most problems, we were the last ones to frolic in the pool.

After lunch, and a change of appropriate wear, the rain started to fall and enticed me to join the fun. Wow! It’s just an awesome feeling just to get wet from above and below. You got so used to hiding from or running away from the rain, that getting wet with drops of water from the sky seemed like a new experience. Hehehe.

Beer was limited, but here’s the catch… JOHNNY WALKER BLACK LABEL… courtesy of Father Regent. Come to think of it, it was the first time I ever drank that, and oh boy, my blood pressure rose because of it, plus the inihaw na baboy as pulutan.

The cool thing there was Father Regent. He ain’t your typical black and white penguin robed priest… well, the language barrier isn’t even an issue. He’s Pinoy, and younger, around 30 to 40 years old, unlike the previous regent who’s probably around 50, a native of Spain, and who spoke only English with a heavy Castillian accent.

He was actually interacting with us. He laughs with us, sings with us during videoke sessions. He ain’t a snob, though he had all the bragging rights, being educated in Rome and in France. I guess it holds true for most Dominicans… it’s just that we don’t have a language barrier with this particular priest. He loved to joke around with Yari, that sophomore girl who headed the logistics committee. Well, Yari (real name Melissa… no, not the other Melissa, who by the way is a hot chick with the anime hairdo, who self-proclaims that her English is impeccable) ain’t your typical girl, she’s a tomboy. A very funny tomboy indeed.

Further, the Bar-Ops got to know each other much better. Establishing networks is of course very important for us, for future contingencies. Even though our profession is purely legal, we do have our own internal politics. At any rate, we’re all thomasians, and law students for that matter, we suffer the same fate.

Well, 9am, as per request (or order it seems) of Father, I am compelled by an oath to attend The Doctor of Laws, Honoris Causa Investiture for the Chief Justice of Russia at TARC. I can’t complain, kelangan magpabibo para may leverage para maka-graduate agad. Hehehe.

And, there’s this cute freshmen girl named J.B. (which stands for Julie Bernadette something.) Yeah, pwede… hehehe.
